 East High School Alumni Association

The purpose of the East High School Alumni Association is to facilitate reunion activities among the alumni of East High School, to celebrate the school's heritage in community life, and to apply the resources available among alumni toward supporting and strengthening the educational, civic, and social programs of  Madison County, Tennessee communities.

Because of our common heritage (East High School) there comes a time that something must be done to change the situation around us. For sometime now, we have too many children dropping out of school, too many graduating unprepared for college, technical jobs or career-ready, too many unemployed, and subsequently, too many locked up in prison. And, the list goes on.  But are these just problems for someone else to be concerned about? Many alumni are answering: “No!, we are all responsible to do what we can or at least try”. To meet this challenge, we support the formation of the East High Alumni Association. This association will continue to build on the great job our reunion committe has done, focus on  celebrating our school’s heritage in community life and apply the resources available among alumni toward supporting and strengthening the educational, civic, and social programs of  Madison County, Tennessee communities.

Some other more specific suggestions from alumni include:

Non-profit Tax Exempt Status (501(c)3 is necessary for most grant applications and Tax Exempt Donations)

Conduct Effective Alumni Meetings ( Agenda, By-Laws, Roberts Rules of Order)

East High Alumni Website and Email

Alumni Scholarship Program

S.W. Beasley Memorial (including advocacy for a new school in Mr. Beasley’s name)

Education and Youth Development Initiatives

East High Museum Development and Maintenance

Deceased Alumni Memorials

Parent, Teacher and Alumni Support Programs

Alumni Advocacy Group (Current Issues, Public Policy, Past Injustices)

George W Beaman Jr- As Alumni, East High School is paramount in our educational foundation. Whether you were in the 1st Grade or in the 1st Graduating Class of 1961, the education and experiences we received at East High still positively impacts our lives today.

I know these are different times but today our schools are experiencing high dropout rates, graduates not ready for college or career jobs and too many students who subsequently end up in prison.

As an alumni group, how can we have a positive impact on some of these dismal statistics?

Merilyn Gunn We can start by developing a 501c-Non profit for a scholarship as little as $250 with only a few people involved. As others join and give we will become bigger and stronger. That will impact. Also Family Counseling with a Spiritual background. Families need help and direction in raising the children they are responsible for, and in directing their own loves. How do we get qualified people to help us start a program like this ?Friday at 6:59pm

George W Beaman Jr Thanks Merilyn for directly addressing the question. You are right on! More to come soon.Friday at 7:51pm

Gloria Bouknight: ‎@ Rosie.... The class of '70 was full of a lot of emotions for those of us in that class. For some FB readers who might not know... In March of 1970 a federal desegregation order was handed down ordering Madison County Schools to shut down to allow for the transition. We couldn't understand why they couldn't have waited till the end of the school year. There was a lot of begging to keep the system open 3 months to allow the school year to end, but the outcries were for naught. As a result, those of us at East were split up between North Sde, West, and Beech Bluff. Those who lived inside the city limits had Jackson High or Merry High. We, the ladies from the Class of '70 had ordered our dresses from Grabers Dept. Store. They were all going to look alike. (Yellow with mint green corsages). During that turbulent time and the transition to other schools, class rings and other senior paraphanalia were "lost". We never got to use our invitations. Some of those who were on the honor roll at East were "regular" students at the other schools. Because of where I lived, I was going to have to attend Jackson High School. If I had a choice it would have been Merry but I wasn't allowed to cross into the Merry Zone. At that time, the principal at Jackson High said if I attended his school, I'd have to graduate in '71 because some whole credits in the county were half credits in city schools. My dad got a special waiver from Supt. Walker to allow me to attend North Side at our expense. My father would take off his job twice a day to drive me back and forth as there was no bus service available. He sacrificed his lunch hour and went to work an hour early and stayed a hour later just so I could graduate in '70. That's how I remember this so well. It's a time that I hope our youth of today can appreciate what we had to go through in order for them to walk the halls of the schools they're in now. And a special shout-out to Mr. Pearson (may he rest in peace) and Mrs. Pearson, for the determination they had to press to find East High memorabilia which was found stored in a storage shed. Now it's proudly displayed in the Denmark West Center. Sorry if this is long, but when it comes to East, the memories come flooding back.... "Dear East, we love you so. Dear East High, you're ideal. The pleasant experiences gained at our alma mater, make us prepare for a brighter tomorrow....." ahh the memories.Saturday at 2:12am · Edited · UnlikeLike · 2.Bessie Hunt VERY INTERESTING!!Saturday at 2:15am · LikeUnlike.Dottie Woods Ooooo yeah! memoriesSaturday at 3:43am via mobile · LikeUnlike.Carolyn J. Ewing Please infrom me more about this federal desegregation order ordering Madison County to intergrate schools. Brown vs Board of Education 1954 which outlawed segregation in this country was not conformed to by Madison County until 1970. From 1954 until 1970 is 16 years. I wondered what was the rush to close EHS since it was so close to the end of the school year. Please, let us all research this federal desegregation order. I am just happy to know someone knows some history on this event. Thank you. I really think we are owed an apology by the system because students graduating wiith honors lost out and all of our pictures and trophies were disrespected.Saturday at 11:00am · UnlikeLike · 1.George W Beaman Jr http://orig.jacksonsun.com/civilrights/sec2_tn_timeline.shtmlSaturday at 11:36pm · LikeUnlike.Carolyn J. George W Beaman Jr-  East High was about Always Doing Our Best, Striving for Excellence and Caring for Those Around Us. Although the school maybe physically gone now, its spirit is still very much alive in each one of us. And what it stood for is still needed to make this world a better place. So lets pull together, like never before, and make East High proud!

The purpose of the East High School Alumni Association is to facilitate reunion activities among the alumni of East High School, to celebrate the school's heritage in community life, and to apply the resources available among alumni toward supporting and strengthening the educational, civic, and social programs of  Madison County, Tennessee communities.

Let us know we have your support.
