Proud to be a Democrat Print E-mail
We will soon hear announcements from a few long time democratic leaders that they have made the decision to switch parties - not because they believe in the ideals and philosophies of the party they are joining but they simply feel re-election is not possible on the democratic ticket. While I understand their concerns, it makes me uneasy that someone would compromise their values simply for the sake of re- election.

I am not only proud to be a Democrat but I truly believe in the foundational principles of the party Thomas Jefferson founded.  More than two hundred years ago our Party's founders decided that "...wealth and social status should not be an entitlement to rule. They believed that wisdom and compassion could be found within every individual and a stable government must be built upon a broad popular base." This is a statement of "inclusion" which typifies our party even today - I am very proud of the fact that most democratic meetings and conventions I attend are very diversified, which quite frankly, represent the diversity in this great nation of ours today.

Our Party has a wonderful history of accomplishments, including the newly enacted Health Care Bill, Social Security, the G.I. Bill of Rights, Medicare and Medicaid, Operation Head Start and NATO just to name a few. It was also a Democratic Administration that put the first "Man on the Moon!"   I am equally proud of our local Party. Under the leadership of our County Chair, Sue Funkhouser, our local party has made great strides in remaining a viable option for voters and volunteers. Our accomplishments include a county website, Facebook, a Democratic Headquarters, two people elected to the State Democratic Executive Committee - Joe Parra and Alan Blakley - and up until the last election, the largest number of active Precinct Chairs in the history of the Brazoria County Democratic Party.   The upcoming 2012 elections are going to be hard fought, but a great man once said "...we may not get everything we fight for, but we must fight for everything we get..."
