MLKCC 2010-Special Recognition Award Print E-mail
The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee of Brazoria County annually presents a Special Recognition Award to individuals in Brazoria County who have made or currently making a positive difference in our county.
The MLKCC is proud to present our 2010-Special Recognition Award to: Neal Bess Jr. of Sweeny,Texas. Neal Bess Jr. has given many contributions to the citizens of Sweeny in the capacity of City Councilman and now serves as Mayor Pro Tem.
Some of his other accomplishments includes:
-Worked with Amoco to secure land for the current Martin Luther King Park in Sweeny.
-Worked with the railroad officials, state and local representatives to provide crossing arms at the Martin Luther King railroad crossing. 
-Instrumental in creating a Jr. Fire Fighters group in Sweeny. Serves on the Executive Board of Directors giving guidance and support to the Fire Department.
-Provided assistance to county residents during Hurricane Ike and enlisted FEMA Resources to help the City of Sweeny.
-Worked with the Drainage District and Sweeny City Manager to clean up the McGrue Cemetery.
-Re-organized the Sweeny Park Board.
- Serves as Volunteer Firemen-Sweeny Fire & Rescue- 30+ years
-Sweeny Lions Club-Past President
-Sweeny Beautification Committee Member
-Volunteer for Brazoria County Habitat for Humanity
-Member: Sweeny District Willing Workers
-Member of the following organizations: Brazoria County Fair Association, American Legion Post serving as Judge Advocate, Brazoria County Combined Honor Guard, Sweeny Area Active Association, George Washington Carver Alumni Association, Sweeny Jr. and Sweeny Chamber of Commerce, Sweeny Civic Club, Sweeny Historical Society, Sweeny Little League, United Way and the Brazoria County Grand Jury .
In addition to serving his community, Mr. Bess is an active member of the Washington Chapel AME Church located in Sweeny, Texas. He never meets a stranger and often performs good deeds to those who are in need on a daily basis.
Mr. Bess is a full time employee at Chevron Phillips /Sweeny complex and has worked for more than 30 years. He is married to Mrs. Audrey Bess, have two children, and seven grandchildren.
The MLKCC is very proud to present to Neal Bess,Jr. the 2010 Special Recogntion Award.
