Willie Williams Jr. Honored on his 79th Birthday Print E-mail

" Blessed and Highly Favored for Seventy-Nine Years" On Saturday, November 24. 2007, Willie Williams Jr was honored by Freeport Mayor Larry McDonald, his family and friends at New Jerusalem Baptist Church multi-purpose room.

 Willie Williams Jr, a bouncing baby boy, was born blessed on November 24, 1928 in Freeport, Texas to the union of Willie Williams Sr. and Gertrude Hawkins Williams. He is affectionately called "Jr".

He attended elementary school in Freeport then later went to Houston, Texas to attend Phyllis Wheatly High School and graduated in 1947. Learning skills from his father, Willie became a self-trained carpenter. And after being drafted into the United States Army and serving two years, he was Honorably Discharged. Upon his return from the service, he rebuilt his mother's home after being destroyed dueing a fire.

Willie later met and married Dorthy Randon in 1952. To this union , three children were born: Belinda, Deborah, Dale. They were happily married until her death in April 1998.

Willie is a "Jack of All Trades". Besides being a carpenter, Willie was a Chef Cook at Whitten Cafe in Freeport for several years and later employed by Dow Chemical of Freeport. He retired in 1987.

Willie excepted Christ at a very early age. He is one of the founders of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in 1944 and was later ordained as a deacon in 1954. He served in several positions in the church: chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, Sunday School teacher for the Senior Men Class, President of the Brotherhood, Secretary of the Men & Women Auxiliary, Member of the Financial Committee and Chairman of the Benevolence Committee.

Willie is a consistent supporter of the Freeport and neighboring communities. He served on the East End Civic Committee getting Mail Delivery started in Freeport, Texas. He supports organizations for scholarships funds for our youth in the community.

Willie's hobbies are landscaping, traveling, and cooking. His ultimate pastimes are spreading God's word and spending time with his family. Click Here for the Photo Gallery for this occasion.
