She's Notre Dame's First Black Valedictorian Print E-mail

April 13, 2010: In the 161 years the University of Notre Dame has been awarding degrees, never had there been an African-American as valedictorian. until this year. She’s Katie Washington of Gary, Indiana.  She carries a 4.0 GPA majoring in biology and minoring in Catholic social teaching.
Washington plans to continue her studies at Johns Hopkins University and follow in her father’s footsteps into medicine.

While other great black leaders during this time pushed for African Americans to accept their superior position and learn crafts, industrial skills, farming skills and other trades that mainstream society saw as inferior, Du Bois wanted equality for African Americans.

No Child Left Behind? Print E-mail
What is No Child Left Behind? The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (the act that our little organization's name is based upon, in case you hadn't noticed) was signed into law in January of 2002. It is the first national legislation on education. No Child Left Behind intends to call for accountability in the nation's public school systems, as well as measure progress, provide parents with more information about their child’s education, and increase the quality of teachers.

Theodore Claude “TC” Kolkhorst Jr., 69, formerly of Lake Jackson passed away on August 12, 2010, at Seton Hospital in Kyle, Texas. TC was born on March 28, 1941, in Navasota, Texas.

TC is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Maria, formerly of Lake Jackson and currently a resident of Wimberley, Texas; stepdaughter, Dr. Erin Silvertooth, of Austin, Texas; daughter, Christina Holloway, of Spring, Texas; son, Todd Kolkhorst, of Spring, Texas; five grandchildren; sister, Margaret Demuth, of Houston, Texas; brother, Don Kolkhorst Sr., of Navasota, Texas; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law.
