Black Heritage Month Print E-mail

ImageBlack Heritage Month has not always been a month long event celebrated by mainstream American society.  Black Heritage Month started as "Negro History Week" by the Director and Founder of an organization called The Association of Negro Life and History.  Dr. Carter G. Woodson started "Negro History Week" in February 1926 in the local Washington D. C. and Baltimore School systems.  The week- long celebration was dedicated to Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.

Black Methodist Denominations "The Great Gathering” Print E-mail

The nation’s three largest Black Methodist denominations, the African Methodist Episcopal (headquarters in Philadelphia, PA), African Methodist Episcopal Zion (headquarters in Charlotte, NC) and Christian Methodist Episcopal (based in Memphis, TN) Churches, with combined memberships of more than 5 million, will convene at a historic gathering next month in Columbia, S. C. The ultimate goal of the gathering is to “address the plight of the African-American male and his critical role in America’s families and communities.”

Holiday season for some African Americans actually start on December 26th with the harvest time ritual known as Kwanzaa. The holiday originated in 1960s, during the civil rights movement to commemorate African heritage of African Americans who use Swahili language.

According to statistical analysis done on various demographic groups, a marriage starting out today has about 41-43% chance of ending in divorce. Research gathered by Glenn T. Stanton, Director of Global Insight for Cultural and Family Renewal and Senior Analyst for Marriage and Sexuality at Focus on the Family, reveals that evangelical Christians who regularly attend church divorce at a rate 35% lower than secular couples.
