Sam Williams is an elementary school principal who is student achievement focused. He knows that student achievement will ensure that the students are prepared for adult life. He has been instrumental in truly "closing the gap" at Velasco Elementary School, a school with the most disadvantaged students in the Brazosport Independent School District.
Through a "no excuse" attitude, he and his dedicated staff brought a sense of accomplishment and pride to the students and parents of the community. Now Velasco Elementary is probably the most visited school in the nation for those who are seeking ways to effectively reach all children.
Sam's was an outstanding elementary classroom teacher and transitioned to administration. His knowledge, interest, and energies gave a needed and positive approach to total school improvement. Through his leadership his campus was selected to pilot a five-year study on school renewal with Dr. John Goodlad, embracing the effective school correlates that were highlighted in his book, "A Place Called School". The successfulness of this pilot was adopted for other campus not only in the district but other campuses affiliated with the Texas Southern Association Elementary Schools as well as a model for other schools in the nation. Other model successes encompasses the Danforth Baldridge processes, strategic planning, outcome based education, year round education, and certainly the Texas Assessment Academic Skills. Brazosport I.S.D has maintained the "Exemplary District" status year after year due to the exceptional leadership of principal Sam Williams where the "Eight Step Processes" were initially originated. Presently he leading his campus with a $150.000.00 a year grant for three consecutive years known as "Accelerated Schools-Improving Teaching and Learning" as well as implementing a visionary concept of training "Leaders of Leaders"-Academic Coaches. In 2006 he and his staff relocated to a beautiful campus which is known as the "Lighthouse of America-Passion, People, Proof, Profit."
A true leader knows that it takes teamwork to be successful and to build loyalty. Sam is a master at including those who work with him in decision-making. There is certain magnetism and enthusiam that he exudes that is contagious and make those who are on his team feel that they are winners.
Sam received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Sam Houston State University and a master's degree in Mid-Management Administration from University of Houston Clear Lake. His postgraduate work includes superintendent's certification and preliminary doctoral studies in educational administration.
Sam is uncompromising in his quest for quality educational opportunities for all young people. In addition to his responsibilities as the school leader, he has presented at various conferences at the state and national level and served as a consultant for school improvement in thirty states. He is involved in professional organizations and continually seeks to improve his skills through educational courses and professional development. Above all he tries to give God his best and is quite instrumental in his church. He is the oldest of three children-the late Barney Williams and today proud mother Bernice Williams, wife-Maurline Williams of thirty years, daughter-Taya Williams-Petroleum Engineer, son-DeJuan Willliams-TCU graduate May 2005 with a double major in Marketing and Management; minor-Economics. His involvement in
church, community, and civic affiliations are infinite and would take too long to highlight!
