Only 23 years old at the time, Douglass overcame his nervousness and gave a stirring, eloquent speech about his life as a slave. Douglass would continue to give speeches for the rest of his life and would become a leading spokesperson for the abolition of slavery and for racial equality.

He was an American historian who first opened the long-neglected field of black studies to scholars and also popularized the field in the schools and colleges of blacks. To focus attention on black contributions to civilization, he founded Negro History Week in 1926. This celebration and remembrance would later evolve into Black History Month.

We will soon hear announcements from a few long time democratic leaders that they have made the decision to switch parties - not because they believe in the ideals and philosophies of the party they are joining but they simply feel re-election is not possible on the democratic ticket. While I understand their concerns, it makes me uneasy that someone would compromise their values simply for the sake of re- election.
